Issue
Statewide offices play a critical role in determining policies and initiatives for Wisconsin. Becoming informed about, participating in and influencing statewide elections, including U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives, Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, State Treasurer, Secretary of State, State Senators, State Assembly Representatives and Superintendent of Public Instruction, is an important responsibility of Wisconsin residents.
Impact on Nonprofits and the Communities They Serve
Individuals elected to statewide offices affect the climate for nonprofits in Wisconsin. These offices influence the ability of nonprofit organizations in Wisconsin to operate and fulfill their missions. With approximately 30,000 nonprofits across the state representing 10% of Wisconsin’s workforce championing charitable purposes, it is imperative that all elected officials understand and support the nonprofit sector in Wisconsin.
Our Position
The Wisconsin Nonprofits Association believes it is essential that the new all elected officials not only understand, but support and help us strengthen the nonprofit sector in Wisconsin. In order to gauge the candidates’ knowledge and support for the nonprofit sector, we have developed the following set of questions that could be asked of candidates on our behalf:
- What would you do to strengthen the nonprofit sector in Wisconsin?
- What experiences have you had with nonprofits as an employee, contributor, beneficiary or founder?
- What role will nonprofits play in your administration?
- Please provide three specific ways you would support and strengthen the nonprofit sector in Wisconsin.
- How would you strengthen the social and economic capacity of the Wisconsin nonprofit sector?
- How would you partner with nonprofits to carry out your vision for Wisconsin?
- What role do you think nonprofits play or should play in Wisconsin’s economy?
- Do you support continuation of the tax exempt status of nonprofits in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin Nonprofits is committed to working with all individuals elected to statewide office in strengthening the nonprofit sector’s ability to contribute to Wisconsin’s well-being.
