STATE NEWS

University of Wisconsin-Madison Center Helps Train Nonprofit Leaders

Management Tip

Topic: How Will the Economic Crisis Affect Volunteering?

Assumption: In hard times, people “can’t afford” to volunteer.

Reality: In hard times when people feel they want to but can't give money, they're more willing to give time. This substitution is even more likely for people already committed to an organization’s cause.

Substituting skills for money is also a pattern in corporate philanthropy, so look to employee volunteering as an alternative or supplement to funding requests.

Remember to encourage (and support!) volunteering in your fundraising appeals. The organization that enables contributors to blend time and money may end the recession with more volunteers and ultimately bigger donors.
