Issue
Advocacy is defined as the act of pleading or arguing in favor of something such as a cause, idea or a policy. While individuals can do this on their own, it is the role of many nonprofits to advocate on behalf of their clients, their staff and the communities they serve. Advocacy is a right for all nonprofits but many do not have the resources or staff to actively invest in advocacy on a regular basis.
Impact on Nonprofits and the Communities They Serve
Advocacy is an important function for all nonprofit organizations. Advocacy can take many roles within a nonprofit organization such as advocating for a particular cause or need or social advocacy on behalf of a broad segment of the community. Whatever the cause or purpose, nonprofit organizations have a clear right to advocate on behalf of the clients and communities they serve. As a trusted source to many individuals and stakeholders, nonprofit organizations are in a unique position to be able to effectively promote activities and policies for the greater good. For some nonprofit organizations, advocacy is their sole purpose while other organizations may be active in advocacy in response to a particular situation or policy. In either case, nonprofit organizations play a key role in advocacy.
